Why consumers shouldn’t buy illegally filled commercially branded cylinders - Safe LP Gas Disitributors Network South Africa
Tuesday 17 September

NO ONE SHOULD buy illegally refilled or traded cylinders. They should not compromise the safety of their families, and others. Nor should they be seen to do so.

Some of the reasons why you should not buy illegally filled commercially branded gas cylinders from unauthorized distributors are:

  1. You cannot be sure that the gas container you buy from illegal traders has been refilled according to proper safety guidelines. Only specially trained people using authorised equipment can refill gas containers safely and correctly.
  2. The owners of the cylinders you purchased did not properly checked them and their working mechanism for safe continuous use. This makes them extremely dangerous and susceptible to leakage.
  3. Gas cylinders may only be filled to 80% of their capacity. Illegal distributors could over-fill the cylinders. Nobody regulates their actions.
  4. Overfilled cylinders are hazardous, especially if exposed to heat.

Once you buy illegally refilled commercially branded cylinders, you:

  1. Encouraging the illegal trading with and refilling of gas cylinders.
  2. Risk the repudiation of insurance claims relating to an incident involving these cylinders. The insurance companies may decline your claim should they find found you purchased gas in an illegally filled commercially branded gas cylinder.
  3. You are breaking the law. You are in contravention of the Pressure Equipment Regulations of SA, 17.1.9(a) and criminal charges could be instituted against you.
