BECOMING A SAFE LP GAS DISTRIBUTOR

South Africa has very low per capita Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LP Gas) consumption relative to its income level, indicating very high market growth potential.

Although South Africa does not currently feature on any of the published proven natural gas reserve lists, the country has the potential to rank amongst the top 30 countries, provided the initial gas estimates, specifically unconventional natural gas reserves, hold true (BP Statistical Review of World Energy, 2020).

The LP Gas industry is expecting a rapid market growth from 2022, due to expected import infrastructure and pricing reform. The demand for LP Gas may reach 10-15 kilogram (kg) per capita. Residential/commercial demand is expected to grow rapidly, from under currently being 300,000 metric tons per year, to over 600,000 metric tons per year by the late 2030s.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, contains the Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER). It determines that illegally filling or trading with branded company-owned cylinders without the written permission from the owner of the cylinders is an offense.

The unauthorised/illegal distributors are posing a dangerous threat to the LPG industry, as their actions could result in accidents causing serious damage to property, injury and even death to innocent victims.

Reputable/Compliant distributors need to ensure that their assets are protected from unauthorised distributors.
